SECONDHAND SMOKE IN BARS AND THE PROBLEM
Secondhand smoke in bars is
as harmful as being the smoker yourself. I am going to target
secondhand smoking in bars. There have been main court cases about
smoking. They are to stop smoking in bars. It is a big thing because
of the bar tenders and waitresses getting sick. From stuff like
heart disease, stroke, and blood clots, etc.
"In the line of duty, bartenders are exposed to more
than their share of other people's troubles -- and other people's
cigarette smoke. But while customers continue to pour out their
woes at neighborhood pubs, at least in California they aren't
smoking while they do it. The state banned smoking in bars
as of last Jan. 1."
This is a paragraph from the article When Bars Say 'No' To Smoking.
This is what bar tenders say they have to put up with. "Long-term
exposure to secondhand smoke, according to evidence from more
than 35 studies of nonsmokers who live with smokers, increases
the risk of lung cancer by about 20 percent. (Active smokers increase
their risk by about 2,000 percent.)"
Waitress and bar tenders have to live with that they have
a 20% more likely chance to get lung cancer then an average person.
Many smokers are mad about the laws in some places that there
is no smoking allowed in bars so they have to smoke out side.
"Dan Wood, a Paragon customer who smokes, said
he dislikes the smoking ban but thinks it's a good idea nevertheless
because "you smoke a little less. I want to quit anyway so
it does not bother me". Paragon customer Chad Biehl said
he tends to stay longer in bars that don't allow smoking.
"If there's smoke, it's in my clothes and hair". When
he worked as a waiter, "I took in three to four cigarettes
a night just from secondhand smoke", Biehl said. From the
article "No smoking signs going up in California bars, casinos".
This law could help people stop smoking. Some say that business
went up greatly.
