The
Tobacco company ads are trying to show us things about their cigarettes
that aren't true, like their advertising. They have names like
"Kool" which is saying that it's cool to smoke. It isn't
cool to smoke. There is a spoof ad that makes fun of the cigarette
Kool. It says "Utter fool". It shows that you're not
cool to smoke, you're a fool to smoke.
Another one is Virginia Slims. It is practically saying that you
will lose weight if you smoke these cigarettes. They also have
pretty women advertising for the ads. They also have women with
big pearly white smiles. The industry is saying that you will
be beautiful as well. Yeah right. Instead you will have stinky
breath, yellow teeth, and when you get old you will be all wrinkly
and you'll also have a creaky voice. At www.now foundation.org
there was a statement saying that within six years of the tobacco
companies introduction of feminine cigarettes and accompanying
advertisement, the number of girls smoking increased 110%.1
Girls are the biggest target of cigarette companies these days.
Why? Because girls these days want to be noticed. If they see
ads about women smoking and the ladies on the ads are beautiful
and skinny, then they think they can reach that image as well.
Also if they see their favorite actress smoking they think it's
cool enough for them to smoke as well. It really isn't.
Another one is Camel. Their ads have cartoon characters on them.
The company was trying to attract adults but instead they attracted
little kids. On a movie called ? one of the speakers was saying
that two year old's could identify Joe Camel as a cigarette ad
and ages four to five could recognize the cartoon character better
than Mickey Mouse. In a spoof ad against the Joe Camel cigarettes
the ad said "Joe Chemo" instead. They have pictures
of the cartoon lying in a coffin or a hospital bed. There is also
another one that has him pushing an IV down the hallway.
There are many other ways that smoking influences people to smoke.
A good example of that is movies and TV. In the movie "A
time to Kill", which starred Matthew McConaughey, there was
thirty tobacco scenes in the movie and twelve of them had the
celebrity in them. In the movie "Independence Day",
Will Smith was in six tobacco scenes out of twenty-eight. This
is a good example of when people see their favorite stars in tobacco
scenes or using tobacco they think it is cool as well. That is
not good.
Advertising is the biggest issue for people to start smoking.
It is advertised in candy stores, magazines, movies and television
and even sport events. These ads are everywhere and are affecting
everyone.
Smoking fact: Nearly 87% of children between the ages of 10 and
15 think that models in tobacco ads are under 25 years old.
It seems that children these days are smoking the most heavily
advertised brands of cigarettes.
The Tobacco Industry commented that a recent rise in tobacco consumption
in Greece was basically due to advertising.
In the essay I found
that women are the most targeted. The advertising companies target
the children pretty good as well. Also the companies think of
little schemes and things to lure people to buy and smoke their
product. Virginia Slims and Joe Camel are good examples. I also
learned that magazine ads aren't the only thing. There is also
sports events where they advertise tobacco.
