Tobacco Kills

 Saskatchewan Lifestyles  Tobacco Index

Tobacco products kill people. Not as sudden as something like a plane crash but just as devastating and deadly.
Most people today know about most of the health risks of tobacco but continue to use them because they think "it can't happen to me." This idea is helped along by the tobacco company's advertising. Another common thought is "I won't have any of those health problems till I'm old and I can quit before then." This statement is also false being as even if you don't smoke for very long, damage is already done. When you're young, 50 seems old but that's not even retirement age, and when you've reached 50 it seems fairly young compared to 80. Many people who were smokers died at a very young age.
Smoking increases the risk of cancer by fifty six percent and tobacco use also causes a variety of other illnesses like:
-emphysema
- chronic bronchitis
- cancer of the lungs
-cancer of the mouth
- gum disease
- stomach cancer
- heart disease
- heart attacks and strokes

I found an article on the internet about a man named Martin who was turning 54 when he was diagnosed with cancer. He was a master salesman with a good career, and he was saving enough money to retire on a yaught in a few years. He had a wife, two kids and many friends. Martin had smoked since he was 15 and 39 years later cigarettes had caught up to him. His illness started with a pain in his right hip and got so bad that he couldn't drive to work. He was misdiagnosed as sciatica. He was finally correctly diagnosed and he was refered to a bone surgeon. The surgeon ordered Martin to a hospital for emergency surgery and they removed a piece of his femur for testing. Martin was in and out of hospital in tremendous pain for radiation treatment. The treatment failed. At Martin's first twinge of pain it was already too late for surgery, his cancer was terminal. There are many other stories out there like Martin's and they're all just as sad.
Every year thousands of people die from tobacco related diseases.
