Life in Rural Medstead

Letters from St. Francis of Assisi

Seidle Seed has been running for about 50 years now. We have 2800 acres of land. We have cows, sheep, bunnies, dogs, cats and horses on our farm. We grow peas, barley, oats and malt barley. We sell the sheep and cows for money. The bunnies we have are just as pets. I also have a cat and a dog. My dog is 7 years old and my cat is a year old. We also have our very own elevator. We have 60 bins 20 made by hand and 40 made with metal parts.

Why is farming important?

Because farmers are the ones that make the flour and food that feed you. We milk the cows, then we send it into the stores that add other ingredients. Beer is also made from a crop called malt barley.

WHY I LIKE THE FARM?

I like the farm because I have more room to play and have fun and you can have more animals on a farm than in a city. But you still have to be careful like by a auger. If you stick your hand in it it will be gone just like that! An auger is a thing that spins around to carry grain up and lots of people have lost their hand by accidentally putting it in there!

Here is an auger.
