| sudden movements
or you will scare the calf. If the bottle you are using smells |
| sour,
the calve won't drink the milk. You have to wash it very good
and then try again. |
Another
reason the calve may not drink, is because it is stealing enough
from
| the other
mothers in the pen. |
To mix up the milk you put powder
milk in the bottle and mix until there are no lumps in the milk.
| Then you put
the lid on. Then you bring it out to the calf to see if it will
drink. |
| If it
doesn't drink we feed the milk to our dog. He really likes it. |
| I also like
to play with the calves. The first thing you do when playing
with them |
| is
to make sure that their mother isn't in sight. If she is in sight
you should'nt play with them. She might think you are trying
to hurt it. Then if she isn't in sight you kneel down and let
them smell you. If they smell you and seem to trust you it might
be okay to play with them. |
| My
dad can watch the cows from the house because we have a camera
in the barn. It is specially designed for inside barns. |
| In
the barn on cold days my dad puts a tarp with a metal bar in
it, so that only the calves can get in. In the barn, there are
three spaces. One space is for all of the cows, another is for
one mother, and one calf. The last one is for the caves only.
It has a heat lamp that only heats objects. |

This year I'm going to start 4-H with a heffer
named Maud. As in Lucy Maud Montgomery. Her number is 103L. She
is the daughter of our bull Wind. All of our cows have their
own names. That is over 200 names! Me and my brother help make
names.
