 CattleBy:Peggy

On my farm we have over 200 cows, and about 10 bulls. We have alot of problems with bulls.Last year one of our bulls had a
heart attack, and one got really sick so we had to sell him.
During the Summer the cows and bulls have to go out into the pasture to graze and for the cows to get bred. They stay out in
the pasture until winter begins. When winter begins, the cattle come into the corals. They get fed hay and rolled oats everyday.
In December some of the cows start to calve, but most of the cows start calving in January. When calving starts my dad has to
go out every night to see if the cows are calving. My dad goes out at 8:00 and then he comes in and sets his alarm for 1:00 am.
At 10:00 pm my mom or my brother go out and check the cows.My dad checks the cows at 1:00 am.Then he goes out at 3:00
am.Then he goes out at 5:00 am, and he checks just before we do the chores.
We use a tractor to feed the cattle. We feed them pen by pen. There are about 20 or 30 cows in each pen.We have to have
somebody watch the gates while somebody is in the pen with the tractor. We do the chores every day.We give the bulls, the
cows and the hiefers grain everyday. We have one pen of cows out back in one of the pastures, because they are not ready to
calve.
In my spare time I work with my 4-H hiefer. 4-H is where you can learn about animals, sewing, and a lot more.My hiefer is
brown and white.she is already halter broken, which means that you can just walk up to her and slip her halter on.
One more interesting thing that happened is:my dad got a name for our farm, it is RPS Gelbvieh.Thats because we raise
gelbvieh cattle! The reason that we raise gelbvieh cattle is because they are really tame and gentle. All of the cattle that we have
will not run away from my parents. We used to have limousin cattle, and they would run away all of the time.We switched to
gelbvieh cattle about 2 years ago.(:My dad is really happy that we did:)
