Disco is a dance style that became popular
during the late 1960's and well into the 1970's. Disco was not
only a dance, it was a music, a fashion, and a lifestyle.
There are many symbols associated with Disco. There were clubs
that always had a big dance floor, and the floor, along with all
the rest of the club, had lights inside it. A very popular symbol
is the disco ball, every club had at least one of these revolving,
sparkling balls hanging from the ceiling.
Along with disco came a new wave of fashion. Mens shirts were
always made of polyester, and had outrageously large collars.
These shirts were full of bright colors or had pictures of people
or maybe designs on them. These shirts were never buttoned up.
It was essential that all men had to expose as much chest hair
as possible without being to vulgar. The hair was always slicked
back and many wore big gold chains.
Disco music is mostly danced to a 4/4 beat. The steps are simple
because there is no fixed routine, only different moves and styles.
This is a very social dance because it is easy to have a conversation
while dancing. Disco is a dance that is more for entertainment
purposes than anything else.
